It’s time for the farewell of 2020 – the year of lots of ups and downs. Entertainment industry witnessed a new trend in terms of releasing their content. As the audience was staying at home during lockdown, many filmmakers released their films directly on OTT. Radhika Apte is a known face of Netflix and lots of memes are doing the rounds across the internet. But we must agree that video streaming platforms have opened new doors for the actors to experiment in terms of variety of roles. TV actors are also coming out of their shells and trying something different on digital platforms.
The year 2020 marked web debut of several Bollywood actors on OTT platforms. Some of them surprised with their powerful comeback while some failed to impress the viewers. But it’s a win-win situation for the audience as they now have hands full of options to choose from. Here is the list of five Bollywood divas who tried their luck on digital platforms through web series and web films –
Sushmita Sen in and as Aarya on Disney+ Hotstar
Miss Universe 1994 and Bollywood actor Sushmita Sen’s web debut turned out to be more successful than her actual entry on the silver screen. Her fans were eagerly waiting for her comeback and the way she returned is commendable and impressive. Aarya leaves a mark on the audience’s heart not just because of Sen’s powerful acting but also as a web series with a strong story and perfect execution. Each and every supporting character helped Sen in making Aarya a memorable show. You might have ignored her performances in films like Samay, Aankhein, Vaastu Shastra, and Nirbaak but you would agree that Bollywood hasn’t offered her a role in which she can prove her caliber as an actor. Sen went on to bag the Filmfare OTT Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series (Female). After the success of this web series, makers have confirmed that the second season is on cards.
Karishma Kapoor in Mentalhood on Zee5 & AltBalaji
No one remembers Vikram Bhat’s Dangerous Ishq through which Karishma Kapoor – the Veteran Bollywood actor and elder sister of Kareena Kapoor Khan returned to the silver screen. But her web debut will always be remembered. Mentalhood is the web series that has the highest IMDB rating among all who are featured in this list. With a rating of 8.1 – Karisha Kapoor and her team entertained the audience before the nationwide lockdown was imposed. After watching this, I believe she should continue to work as she has the potential to pull off the performance-driven roles.
Lara Dutta in Hundered on Disney+ Hotstar
It seems Disney+ Hotstar took the responsibility of bringing back Miss Universe pageant holders to action again. Before Sushmita Sen, Miss Universe 2000 and actor Lara Dutta was featured in a powerful role of ACP Saumya Shukla in Hundred. Dutta surprised the audience with her acting skills. From action to emotion to comedy, she did it all and pulled the role with ease. She proved that she is one of the most underrated actors in Bollywood and won the hearts of audiences and critics alike. If you haven’t watched the series go and check this out.
Urvashi Rautela in Virgin Bhanupriya on Zee5
Virgin Bhanupriya is anything but entertaining. There was a time when such adult comedies were in trend but these days the internet is already flooded with such content and now the audience is looking for some fresh and unique approach. Urvashi Rautela’s web debut through this project is to remind us of her previous roles in Bollywood films, where she is there to grace the screen with her mesmerizing screen presence. But this is high time to start experimenting with performance-driven roles. Her fans and audience would love to see her acting on screen.
Bipasha Basu in Dangerous on MX Player
Bipasha Basu is among those leading ladies of Bollywood who vanished after marriage. She was away from the limelight and if media reports to be believed she was waiting for a good project. But to be very honest, MX Player’s ‘Dangerous’ is not the kind of project Basu’s fans were waiting for so long. She looks hot and had already proved her acting caliber in many films in the past. She did full justice to the role but Dangerous has nothing that can excite the audience. Bipasha Basu was the only interesting thing but she couldn’t help in saving this web series from falling flat.
