These Bollywood films of 2020 failed to do well on OTT platforms

2020 brought a big shock to the business of Bollywood. As the nationwide lockdown was imposed in March, cinema halls have been shut and shootings of the films were postponed. While it was a huge loss for movie theatre owners, the Covid 19 pandemic opened the door to new opportunities for OTT platforms. OTT platforms witnessed a huge surge in content consumption during the lockdown. Filmmakers observed this audience shift and considered releasing their films on OTT. But, a few of them did not get a good response to the digital space either.

OTT platforms are flooded with good content and competition is even tougher here. Bollywood filmmakers need to understand that they need to change the strategy for digital platforms. Film promotional strategies might work in bringing the audience to the cinema halls, but it won’t work on OTT platforms. Once the ticket is sold, it’s sold! But people won’t hesitate to stop streaming online if the content is not living up to their expectations.

Here are some honorable mentions of Bollywood films which were flop on OTT in 2020-:

Sadak 2

Even with a star cast like Sanjay Dutt, Pooja Bhatt, Alia Bhatt, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Jisshu Sengupta in the lead roles, the film was not able to satisfy the audience. The trailer of the film also became one of the most disliked videos on YouTube. Released on 28th August on Disney+ Hotstar, it is definitely the biggest fail on OTT in 2020.

Coolie No.1

People had a lot of expectations from this film. It’s David Dhawan’s 45th film and the remake of his own 90s superhit comedy with the same name starring Govinda and Karishma Kapoor. But Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan starrer this new version failed to impress the audience. Released on Amazon Prime video on the occasion of Christmas, critics and viewers slammed the film alike. As per the media reports, Dhawan won’t be making any more remakes and we are glad to know this.

Laxmii

Laxmii, which was to supposed to release in May 2020, had a digital premiere on Disney+ Hotstar in November 2020 amid the pandemic. Starring Akshay Kumar and Kiara Advani in the lead roles, it follows the life of Asif, who gets possessed by the spirit of a transgender person. Directed by Raghava Lawrence, the official remake of the Tamil movie Kanchana was not able to meet up to the desire of the audience, not even called a praise-worthy remake.

Durgamati

Another remake of a south Indian film bites the dust. Telugu film Bhaagmathie was a hugely successful film. Critics praised the film and the audience fell in love with Anushka Shetty’s powerful performance. However, Durgamati failed to recreate the magic. Starring Bhumi Pednekar and Arshad Warsi in lead roles, this Hindi remake did not get good reviews. Released on 11th December on Amazon Prime Video, it is a fast-paced, intelligent thriller including the world of conspiracy and crime, served with a layer of the scare.

Khaali Peeli

An adaptation of the South Indian movie Taxiwala. The action comedy-drama flick stars Ananya Panday, Ishaan Khatter, and Jaideep Ahlawat in the lead roles. Released on Zee Plex on 2nd October, the Maqbool Khan-directorial follows the journey of a taxi driver as he picks up a girl, who turns out to be his childhood sweetheart Pooja. They escape a series of events leading to a roller coaster ride. The movie garnered 2.4 ratings on IMDb and many don’t even remember it.
