Raji creates history; becomes the first Indian game to be nominated at the Game Awards

For the first time ever, an Indian game has been nominated at the Game awards, titled ‘Raji: An Ancient Epic’ has been nominated in the Best Debut Indie Game category at the Game Awards 2020. The game was developed in Pune, Maharashtra, and is based on the story of a girl who is chosen by the divine beings to fight various evil forces. The game portrays Hindu and Balinese mythology and the setting seems to be Rajasthan. The gameplay and visuals of the Indian craft are just amazing, with a very own soundtrack in it. The visuals represent a Pahari style of painting, and it gets inspiration from the Indian epics Ramayana as well as Mahabharata.

The mythology-driven game, by Pune-based Nodding Heads Games, is an action-adventure game with an enriched story, game art, and music reflective of the Indian culture. After around two years in development, the game came out on Nintendo Switch this year on August 18. Soon after that, it was released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on October 15.

Released in August 2020 for Nintendo, and in October 2020 for Windows, the developers worked hard in order to make the game reach the masses. The development for the title began way back in 2018, but it went slow because the makers couldn’t generate enough funds. One of the founders of the studio behind the creation of the game had to sell her apartment to sustain the team of developers working on the project.

However, after all the struggle, the good news will surely bring immense pride, to not only those who were involved in developing the game, but also to every Indian in the global gaming community and could soon become the first made-in-India game to win the international accolade. The award show will stream on various platforms, including YouTube, on December 11, 5:30 AM IST.
